NGAKAU THERAPY
Religious Trauma & Cult Recovery Counselling
Leaving a high-control group, cult or harmful religious environment can affect far more than your beliefs. It can leave you questioning your identity, relationships, sense of safety and even your ability to trust your own judgement.
Counselling can provide a space to make sense of what you've experienced, understand the impact it has had on you, and begin building a life that feels like your own.
Available in Christchurch and online through out New Zealand

When leaving changes everything
Recovery isn't simply about leaving a group or changing your beliefs. For many people, leaving means losing a community, relationships, certainty and a framework that once explained how the world worked.
You may find yourself questioning decisions that once felt simple, struggling with guilt or fear, grieving relationships, or trying to work out who you are outside the group. These responses can make sense when you've spent a long time in an environment where belonging, identity and behaviour were closely controlled.
You might be experiencing…
The impact of a high-control or harmful religious environment can show up in many different ways, sometimes long after you have left.
Guilt & Fear
Fear of doing something wrong, being punished, or making choices that once weren't permitted.
Loss of Identity
Wondering who you are, what you believe, or what you actually want outside the group.
Difficulty Trusting Yourself
Second-guessing decisions or struggling to trust your own thoughts, feelings and judgement.
Grief & Isolation
Missing people, community, certainty or a sense of belonging — even when leaving was right for you.
Relationships & Boundaries
Learning to set boundaries, navigate family relationships and recognise what healthy relationships can look like.
Trauma & Overwhelm
Anxiety, shame, hypervigilance, emotional overwhelm or feeling disconnected from yourself.
You don't need to identify with all of these experiences to seek support.

Rebuilding a life that feels like yours
Recovery isn't only about understanding what happened. It can also be about discovering who you are when you have the freedom to make your own choices.
Counselling can help you rebuild trust in yourself, explore identity and values, strengthen boundaries, understand patterns of fear or compliance, and develop relationships that allow for choice and difference.
You don't need to reject religion or spirituality to work through religious trauma. My role isn't to tell you what to believe, but to support you in working out what feels right for you.
